Finding a loved one in a cemetery can be a difficult task, especially if you are traveling from out of the state, let alone half way around the world. But one such cemetery has bridged the gap for guests who are looking for their loved ones and ancestors.
The Chinese Benevolent Association, which owns and maintains the Chinese Cemetery on Waltham Park Road in Kingston, Jamaica has provided an online image database for their guests so they can find their family interred there. Guests simply go to the association’s website, click the “Database” tag and request access to the database. You do need a Google account but this service is free to anyone approved and allows guests to search for their loved ones or ancestors by their name and see photos of the tomb.
The cemetery sits on 11.5-acre and has approximately 3,600 graves, so accuracy was essential for the cemetery, which was founded in 1907. And the vice-president of the Chinese Benevolent Association, Robert Hew, explains that even if the tomb has suffered damage–as some did in the 1970s due to vandalism–their record-keeping is excellent and guests are still able to find who they are searching for in the database.
Overall, a wonderful way for people to locate their loved ones.
