Cemeteries, as many people know, are brimming with history. They are a link to our past and offer us the opportunity to learn about our forefathers. Many cemeteries are using their cemeteries to help educate the public about the history of their city, like Wilmington, NC’s Oakdale Cemetery, but the Gallatin City Cemetery in Gallatin, TN is doing something just a little different. And they have help.
Every year, the Gallatin City Cemetery hosts a Candlelight Cemetery Tour and they also happen to be celebrating their 20th anniversary of the program. The tours include guides who are dressed in character as local prominent figures who were interred at the cemetery. The actors tell the tour participants stories of the time. The tours are an annual fundraiser for the local museum, Sumner County Museum, which will be using the money raised from the tour this year to help relocate the Carriage House on East Main Street in Gallatin. After relocation of the building, they will open the first floor of the building to the public for tours.
