If you have not been to Wilmington, NC, the city has a rich southern history, much of it tied to the Civil War, and currently you can tour the city at night during one of their many haunting tours. Oakdale Cemetery in Wilmington, NC is doing something a little different than most cemeteries–flashlight tours. That’s right; the cemetery hosts monthly group tours of their cemetery at night and individuals learn about the history of some of the people buried there and the history of the time. The tour also gives group members a chance to explore while being in a large group.
One of the situations many historic cemeteries find themselves in is finding ways to maintain the grounds and these tours help provide that revenue. Not only that, the tours also help provide tourist dollars to the city of Wilmington, which in turn then helps to promote the tours. The city is only a few miles away from the Atlantic ocean, and with the third largest college in the state set up in the downtown area (Cape Fear Community College), so there is always a reason why the city is bustling. Lastly, the tours are both fun AND educational, mostly specific to the history during the Civil War. I highly recommend visiting Wilmington, NC and taking one of these tours.
