ARLINGTON, Va. (WJLA) June 5, 2015 — A Manassas woman made a very personal gesture to help a stranger bury his son at Arlington National Cemetery.
Diane Carroll’s husband served two decades in the Navy. He died in 2000 and is buried in section 68 at Arlington. The plot he is in has room for one more burial. Carroll is offering that space to the family of Staff Sergeant Steven Florich.
Florich was killed during a training mission in March. The Black Hawk helicopter he was in went down in heavy fog killing all 11 soldiers and Marines on board. The staff sergeant was not active duty at the time of the accident, so he is not eligible for an in-ground burial. Authorities at the cemetery said Florich can be cremated and placed in a columbarium or a niche wall.
